The Most Hated Pop Culture Trends That Need to Diin 2017

Every year has its fair share of viral trends. Remember last year when everyone was obsessively playing Pokmon Go?

There are hated home trends in specific categories, likehome dcororfood, and then there are trends so ubiquitous that they infiltrate every single corner of the culture. This year, its almost impossible to walk down the street without bumping into a bearded guy with a man bun whos wearing a romper and drinking a Unicorn Frappuccino. Basically.

Fidget spinners have actually been around for years, but their popularity skyrocketed following a series ofYouTube videosfeaturing kids performing tricks with them. Marketed as a tool for ADHD, the toys quickly took over every kind of retail establishment from toy stores to gas station counters.

Now fidget spinners come in every conceivable color and have features such as LED lights anddragon wings. But are they really fulfilling their intended purpose, or are they just another distraction for kids who suffer attention disorders? Were thinking its the latter.

Next: This trend is sea-riously overrated.

These mythical sea creatures have fascinated people for centuries, and this year theobsessiongrew even stronger. Mermaid themed hair color, mermaid tail blankets, mermaid Frappucinos, jewelry, artwork, apparel, makeup brushes shaped like tails enough already.

Hard truth time: You are not a mermaid. You will never be a mermaid. Move on, and take your 100% seamless silicone swimmablemermaid tailwith you (seriously).

Next: Not everything you read on the internet is true.

One of the most popular descriptors of 2017 has no solidly agreed upon definition, but in essence, fake newsis a kind of modern-day propaganda used to intentionally mislead groups of people.

The 2016 election of Donald Trump and ensuing media frenzy following his presidency has been rife with allegations of fake news. Facebook and other social media platforms have also faced criticism in the age of fake news, since these platforms make it so easy to spread lies to millions of people.

With any luck, credible journalism will find its footing again in the coming year.

These old-timey letter boards areall the rageright now but theyre not nearly as cheap as they were back in the day. Amateur Instagram photographers love showing off their cleverness with endless iterations of pithy quotes and phrases written out in white letters on black felt boards.

Maybe they were amusing at first, but this whole trend has become very been there, quoted that. Its time for a new form of self-expression.

Next: No one even remembers what your real face looks like.

Sorry Beyonc.Beyonc via Instagram

Every girl ever wants to look as good in selfies, and in the world of Snapchat, that inevitably means adding animal ears, crowns of flowers, or the much-loved beauty filter. These ridiculous features have even made their way ontofashion runwaysin real life. If 2017 had a face, it would be an average girl with puppy ears and a cartoon tongue sticking out.

Your real face is beautiful just the way it is, OK? No filter required.

Next: A fashion trend better left for dead.

The hipsters have gone too far. RompHims are a no on so many levels.

Next: Excuse me, your teeth are jet black and its disgusting.

Thisnatural remedybecame super popular this year, showing up in every place from toothpaste to lemonade, beauty masks, and supplements. And while it does have a few health benefits, its not the magical cure-all that marketers claim it is.

Our advice on this one add some to your regimen if you want to, but dont expect activated charcoal to bring about world peace.

Next: Solid proof that beauty bloggers have way too much time on their hands.

Braided, feathered, squiggled, ponytailed ladies (and gentlemen) cant seem to leave theireyebrowsalone, and it seems like the more ludicrous your brows, the better potential you have for scoring likes on Instagram.

Crazy eyebrows are one of those trends that people will look back on in 50 years and wonder what in the world made us think it looked good. In fact, were wondering that already.

Next: Once politicians start mimicking your dance moves, its time to move on.

If both Hillary Clinton and Squidward are doing it, its over. doble-d/iStock/Getty Images

Every year has a signature dance move. In 2015, we were forced to watch everybody Whip and Nae Nae. This year its all about that Dab.

Dabbing, or more specifically making a bowing motion as you put your head against your bended arm, first got introduced in Skippa da Flippas 2014 video How Fast Can You Count It. People have been dabbing ever since, but 2017 saw dabbing take off in popularity, with everyone fromHillary Clintonto Squidward getting in on the action.

This trend has lasted way too long, and its time to come up with something better for 2018.

Next: Spin the color wheel and pick something else already.

You can buy pretty much everything in Millennial pink. KatarzynaBialasiewicz/iStock/Getty Images

Pink is pretty and it always will be. But ever since the trend makers claimedMillennial pinkas their own, its gotten way out of hand.

Pink walls, pink furniture, pink clothes, pink makeup this apricot almond hue is everywhere. And yeah, rose gold iPhones are partly to blame for the popularity, though its hard to pinpoint exactly where and when the infatuation began.

Its not the worst trend on the list but there are other colors out there. Embrace them.

Next: Its only a matter of time before they add green boogers as a flavor option.

Of course they have pumpkin spice. Amazon

There was a time not long ago when the biggest decision you had to make in the Oreo aisle was simple: regular, or double stuffed?

These days, Nabisco execs appear to have lost their damn minds, throwing every possibleflavorcombination at the wall just to see what sticks with consumers. The new Oreo options include but are not limited to Peeps, Swedish Fish, Lemon Twist, Watermelon, Cotton Candy, Caramel Apple, Mississippi Mud Pie, Smores, Dunkin Donuts Mocha, Birthday Cake, Candy Cane, and, obviously, Pumpkin Spice.

Next: Theres a reason they call it chin pubes.

We get it. Youre super hip. iStock/Getty Images

Hey guys, heres a novel suggestion how about digging out your forgotten razor and using it for a change? The beard thing is over now.

Next: The stuff of your actual nightmares.

Itbrought clowns to the forefront this year. Warner Bros. Pictures

Thanks in part to Stephen Kings cult classic movieItgetting a redo in 2017, clowns are bigger and creepier than ever. In fact, Pennywise was one of the top-selling adult Halloween costumes this year (and someone made a terrifyingkid-sizedone, too).

Remember thosenews storiesabout people dressed as clowns just lurking around town for no good reason? Yeah, weve had enough of that. Its time to hang up all the clown costumes for good.

Next: This depressing trend needs to stop right now.

>

Keep talking about it until its no longer an issue. Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Theres nothing funny about this alarming trend.

After the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal broke, it led to allegations against many otherprominent menin Hollywood and beyond, including Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, and more. It seems like every day a new name gets added to the list of accused offenders.

While its good that anyone guilty of this inexcusable crime will be brought to justice, the real victory will be achieving a year thats free from sexual misconduct.

Unless you have celiac disease there isnt much of a point. chameleonseye/iStock/Getty Images

At some point in the past couple years, gluten became public enemy 1 for very little reason besides hype.

If youre not part of the 1% of the population who hasceliac disease, then maybe its time to start adhering to the everything in moderation adage rather than trying to pretend that gluten-free bagels are edible (spoiler alert: they arent).
