Instructions for uploading to TURNITIN

Use theNursing Student Writing Guidelinesfor writing your papers. The Guidelines are based on theAmerican Psychological Associations (APAs) Publication Manual(latest edition). A checklist is included with the Guidelines. Not all formatting is addressed in the Guidelines, so you must also purchase the APA Manual in the bookstore or an online store.Points will be deducted if you do not follow the Guidelines/APA format.

Papers will be evaluated based on criteria established by the nursing faculty to evaluate writing skills (CLICK on WRITING RUBRIC [PDF file]) for criteria. I will grade your paper and return it to you (with comments) via Blackboard. Please make sure that you read my feedback. Feedback is provided to help you improve your assignment submissions.

AFTER YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND SAVED YOUR PAPER ON YOUR HARD DRIVE, you must submit the paper to Turnitin. You will receive a report from Turnitin indicating similarities between the text in your paper and text in an existing document. Turnitin highlights those similarities, providing an annotated document showing your paper and the original source and the percentage of the paper that was plagiarized. Plagiarism is a serious transgression in the University; students who plagiarize can be dismissed for academic misconduct.

You may re-submit your paper (overwrite a previously submitted paper) to Turnitin BEFORE THE DUE DATE to correct plagiarism. I suggest you do that. A paper that indicates a high level of direct quoting and/or lack of citations and referencing will earn a failing grade.

Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, Scripps National Spelling Bee

National Spelling Bee, in fullScripps National Spelling Bee; formerly (until 2004)Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee,spelling beeheld annually in the Washington, D.C., area that serves as the culmination of a series of local and regional bees contested by students (mostly American) in grades below the high-school level. It is administered on a not-for-profit basis by the E.W. Scripps Company as an educational promotion.

Although a nationwide spelling competition for children had been contested in 1908 under theauspicesof theNational Education Association, the idea was not revisited until 1925. In that year theLouisvilleCourier-Journal, the organizer of a state bee for Kentucky grade-school students, invited other American newspapers to join it in sponsoring students to compete in a national bee. More than two million schoolchildren entered competitions on the local level, and by June the field had been narrowed to nine contestantsone for each participating newspaperwho were sent to Washington. The inaugural champion was 11-year-oldFrank Neuhauser of Louisville, who correctly spelledgladiolusto claim a prize of $500. The event proved popular, and the number of participating newspapers (and therefore contestants) soon proliferated. In 1941 the sponsorship of the national bee was assumed by the Scripps newspaper conglomerate, though individual newspapers continued to represent students regionally.Merriam-Websterbegan an affiliation with the bee in 1958, with itsWebsters Thirdunabridged dictionary emerging as the official arbiter of a words spelling; the company also produced a study guide for contestants.

By the late 20th century, the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee (renamed Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2004) had expanded to more than 200 contestants hailing from areas throughout the United States and its territories as well as from several other countries. (In 1998Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica became the bees first non-American winner.) Over the years the rules of competition were refined, and the winnings increased, with champions in the early 21st century collecting more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. Additionally, after having been broadcast on radio and television only occasionally during the first few decades of competition, the national finals began airing annually onESPNin 1994. As the level of competition gradually roseowing in part to contestants increasingly rigorous preparationobservers often remarked that the words at the national bee were more obscure and difficult than those of past years. While an orthographic knowledge ofknackwas sufficient for an early winner of the contest, champions in the early 21st century were required to correctly spell words such asappoggiaturaandLaodicean. However, this did not appear to diminish public interest in the bee, which was arguably more of a media phenomenon than ever before.

The champions of the National Spelling Bee are provided in the table.

The amount to be used for the allocation of such pari-mutuel prizes and related calculations of pari-mutuel prize values shall be as defined in the Mega Millions Finance and Operations Procedures.

Pari-mutuel Treatment of Megaplier Prize Categories Two (2) and Three (3).The expected payout percentage for an Mega Millions Megaplier drawing is 50% of Mega Millions sales. However, because Mega Millions Megaplier pays out fixed prizes, the total prize liability will be above or below 50% of sales based on the number of winning plays at each prize level. If the base prizes awarded for any Mega Millions drawing meet the pari-mutuel criteria of the Mega Millions liability cap, as outlined in the Mega Millions Finance and Operations Procedures, then the Megaplier prizes shall be calculated upon the same pari-mutuel basis. Prize Categories Two (2) and Three (3) shall be an amount equal to the pari-mutuel prize value multiplied by the Megaplier number selected for that drawing.

One drawing machine is available for the 5/70 portion of Mega Millions drawing and one machine is available for the 1/25 portion of Mega Millions drawing. If either machine is out of service, the Georgia Lotterys Lotto drawing machine is reprogrammed for Mega Millions drawing. The particular ball set to be used for each component of a given Mega Millions drawing is determined by random selection from among the available ball sets.

Prior to each Mega Millions drawing, the Georgia Lotterys Drawing Specialist conducts 3 test drawings with each machine. The balls are then re-racked in random order and the machine resealed until the official drawing is conducted. After the official drawing, 2 more test draws are conducted with each machine to ensure the validity of the official drawing results.
